I came to believe when I was a child about 7
years old. I learned about God through Sunday School classes.
I knew for sure I didn't want to go to hell. I wanted to be
with God in Heaven. I wanted to live my life the best I could
so it could be a blessing to others. And God would help me do
that. When I was a young child my Mom developed cervical
cancer. All I knew as a young child is my Mom was really sick
with something that started with the letter "C" and it must be
bad because my grandparents came in from out of state to help take
care of the household and me and my sister. I could tell by
watching all the grown-ups they were worried, maybe really scared.
I wanted to cheer them up so I went around telling everyone Mama
would be ok and she'd be home the day after her operation. I usually
got corrected. The night before surgery my sister and I slept in our
parents bed and we prayed again that Mama would be ok and come back
home to us the day after surgery. That everything would be ok,
the bad stuff would disappear. Of course, the grown ups
being grown ups, knew lots more than we did as kids and tried to
soften their perception of reality and told us she wouldn't be able
to come home the day after surgery. This was about 1962.
They didn't have same day/next day surgery back them. I just
wouldn't waiver in my believe she'd be back home the next day,
despite what the grown ups said. Guess what happened.
She had the surgery early in the morning. When the surgeon
went to remove the cancer, it was no longer there. It had
disappeared. AND Mama came home the day after surgery.
She wasn't feeling her best but she was home and the bad stuff had
disappeared. As an adult I try to remember this. We are
to have the faith of a child and believe God will be there for us,
no matter what our grown up "common sense" tells us. God's
sense is not common at all. Miracles do happen. This was
one of them. P.S. She's never had a recurrence either and is
now 72 |
